DUTY ON WHISKY.

PROTESTS IN BRITAIN.

“TAXED OUT OF EXISTENCE."

(Received. Feb. 20, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 18

Whisky distillers are seeking Government relief from the exhorbitant duties on spirits. An Irish firm has written to Members of Parliament emphasising that whisky is being taxed out of existence. Whereas the duties contributed 19 per cent, of •the total revenue in 1895-6, it has since steadily fallen to 4.3 per cent. Therefore the increased duties h'ave been an utter failure from the standpoint of the exchequer. AVholesome matured whisky lias been placed out of the reach of the working classes and its place filled by foreign and colonial wines, which are highly fortified with crude spirits.
