PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH

AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON’S FIRST INNINGS. (By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington was resumed in hot weather. After lunch O'Brien (right-hander) took stroke to Bush for the initial over. Vivian was the bowler at the other end. Applause greeted O’Brien, who stands four inches over six feet, when he picked Bush off his pad for a shot which was a boundary all the way. The bowling was steady enough to peg the batsmen down to quiet cricket, and singles were mostly the order, Alarm of Fire. At this stage an alarm of fire was given in the grandstand. A wisp of smoke was visible, but a couple of buckets of water put an end to the fire. At 140 Weir took over from Vivian. Wellington lost its third wicket when O’Brien was snapped up by Hampton, off Garrard. 155—3—23. Blandford, who succeeded him. ran a three for byes off Garrard, then faced Weir to be immediately caught by Hampton. 158 —4—o. Lamson was next. Smart running between the wickets had the flail on its toes, but the batsmen took nc undue risks.

Vivian was given the ball at .‘he terrace end and he got one past Lamason which almost foani Hie wicket. In Vivian’s next over Lamason went for a hit, missed and was out l.b.w. 199 —5—20. Skipper Goes In to Bat. James, the Wellington skipper, joined Tindill, who wanted 23 for Ills century. At the tea adjournment the score was five for 234. Bush and Matheson were the bowlers at the resumption. James was ap* plauded when he turned Bush to the leg fence, and Tindill, who appeared to be feeling the strain of the occasion, got Matheson smartly through the cover to the rails.

Over-eagerness characterised T'ndill’s play for a time. He got his wellearned century when he tapped Weir up the crease to steal a single. He was given a rousing reception. It was tame cricket for a spell until James got well on to Vivian.

An Easy Catch. The partnership was broken at 284, when Tindill went right out of his crease to Garrard and playing a weak defensive shot, cocked the ball up for Vivian to run in and take an easy catch. Tindill was at the wickets for close on five hours, during which he had hit nine fours. 284 —6 —106. Parsloe joined James, and got four to leg off Garrard, but had a life when Dacre, with the sun- in his eyes, missed a difficult chance near in on the leg side. The Auckland fielding slumped badly in the last ten minutes and the extras approached the 50 mark. At stumps James and Parsloe were still unbeaten, and the total stood at 352 only 14 runs behind Auckland’s first innings score. The most successful bowler was Garrard, whose three wickets cost 58 runs. Weir's two wickets cost 62 runs, and Vivian's one 73. Bush and Matheson bowled without success for 47 and 66 respectively.

TO-DAY’S PLAY. WELLINGTON MAKE 397. LEAD OF 31 ON INNINGS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington was resumed in hot weather, before a fair attendance. There was a good wicket. Wellington were all out at noon for 397, giving the southerners a lead of 31 runs on the first innings. James (87) took the first over from Bush, and played a maiden, his partner Parsloe (22) doing likewise to Garrard. By hooking Bush twice for a brace James started scoring, and the next over pulled the All Black to the boundary. Parsloe was uncomfortable, ami after poking at Garrard attempted to pull a straight ball, missed, and was out leg before. 364 —7 —24.

Hir> Fifth Century. When Newman joined James the latter required only three for a century. Three singles put the visitors in the lead, and another made James 99. Keen to get, another run James twice lapped Bush down the pitch and started off, but his partner was unwilling and it was not until the last hall that the Wellington captain slammed a full toss to the boundary, amid sustained applause, for his fifth Shield century. It is a coincidence that the Auckland captain, Weir, also has five centuries to his credit in Shield cricket. James continued to bat with restraint until caught by a wretched stroke off Garrard in attempting to repeat a pull to the boundary. 380—S —IOB. The taii-enders did not stay long. Freeman having hard luck to play Bush on when shaping nicely, and Blundell being slumped going for a big hit.

D. H. Garrard, five wickets for 69 runs, took the bowling honours, and the slow bowler well deserved his success, as he had to work hard to get any work on the ball on the easy wicket prevailing.
