NAPIER CARNIVAL.

OPENING A GREAT SUCCESS. RECORD CROWD PRESENT. NAPIER, Sunday. The carnival to commemorate the restoration of Napier after the earthquake was commenced yesterday, the proceedings being opened by the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe. The town is full of visitors and the crowd in the streets yesterday was the largest ever seen in Napier. The programme commenced yesterday morning, When a procession, comprising 100 floats representing trade and Industry and including humorous tableaux passed through the principal streets of the town.

At McLean Park the GovernorGeneral and the Lady Bledisloe were welcomed by the municipal authorities. The principal -speakers were the commissioner, Mr J. S. Barton, -the (Mayor, Mr ,T. Vigor Brown, and the chairman -of the carnival committee, Mr M. S. Spence.

Following His Excellency’s reply to the welcome, the coronation of the carnival queen, Miss Sheila Williams took place. The scene was further -enlivened by a quick-step contest in which seven bands took part. In the afternoon a number of passenger flights were made by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and an aero pageant was conducted by t’he Napier Aero Club.

Another band contest was held in the evening, “own selection” items being the subject of contest. An important evening function was the Napier Chamber of Commerce Jubilee dinner, at which the Governor-General and representatives of other chambers of commerce were present. Dancing and other entertainments were provided for t’he general public. Special services were held in all the churches -to-day. The celebrations will continue for a week. THEIR EXCELLENCIES IN AIR.

FLIGHT OF SOUTHERN CROSS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, Monday. The Napier Aero Club's pageant on Saturday was an outstanding success. Before the pageant commenced Lord and the Lady Bledisloe took a flight In the Southern Cross over the city, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith being congratulated by the Governor-General on the Tasman flight. Band Contest. Results of the band contest were:— Quickstep.—B Grade: Napier Citizens 1, Carterton Silver 2. C Grade: Palmerston North Garrison 1, Napier Technical 2, Kaponga 3. Own Selection. —B Grade: Carterton Municipal 1, Napier Citizens 2. C Grade: Palmerston North Garrison i, Waipukurau Town 2, Napier Technical 3, Kaponga 4.
