BULGARIAN ROYALTIES,. ACTION OP THE VATICAN. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received Jan. 23, 1.30 p.m.) ROME, Jan. 22. The Vatican publishes in Observatore Romano the letters of King Boris and Princess Giovannia asking Papal authorisation for their marriage, and pledging catholic upbringing for the children. This is interpreted as meaning that they have been virtually ex-oom-munciated.
Queen Joanna, wife of King Boris of Bulgaria, formerly Princess Giovannia, daughter of the King and Queen of Italy, gave birth to a daughter on January 13. Three days later a message from Rome stated that the Vatican was pained because the Bulgarian Royal Family had broken the promise to raise the children -of King Boris as Roman Catholics. The Queen’s infant Princess had been baptised in'the Orthodox Church.
Monsignor Roncalli, Apostolic Delegate at Sofia, protested to the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, M. Mouchanoff, regarding the baptism of the tittle Princess. M. Mouchanoff replied that the child was baptised owing to the decision of the head of the State and tho Government in conformity with the stipulation in the Constitution and the will of the nation. Monsignor Roncalli also protested to the King. According to a later despatch from Rome a Vatican dignitary says he was awaiting the Queen’s recovery to ascertain whether she consented to the baptism in the Orthodox Church. If she did not dissociate herself from the baptism siie would not be received by the Pope.
