GIVEN OVATION AT HASTINGS. SIR CHARLES’ AMBITION. .. TO BE OLDEST LIVING PILOT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Friday. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith arrived at Hastings from Gisborne this afternoon in continuation of his Lour of the Dominion. The Southern Cross carried 14 passengers. Sir Charles was welcomed by the Mayor and prominent citizens. lie received a great ovation from a crowd of about 4000 people assembled at the Hawke’s Bay Aero Club’s new aerodrome. The club celebrated the occasion by holding a very successful air pageant. The Southern Cross was escorted by seven aeroplanes—four local machines and three Air Force machine^. Replying to the welcome, Sir Charles said he did not aspire to be the world’s greatest pilot, but the world’s oldest. He valued his neck above everything else, lie did not intend risking it unnecessarily. The noted aviator will take part in the Napier Carnival aero pagaent 'tomorrow. lie will return lo Hastings on Sunday for passenger flights. One of the passengers will be Mrs Adamson, a centenarian, who made her first flight last November.
