AN APPEAL.

Atr D. V. Bryant, of Hamilton, has formulated an ambitious scheme of land settlement for the relief of unemployment. The details are well known to readers of The Waikato Times, and financiers and others who have carefully considered them declare that the proposals are sound and the project excellent. The first essential for putting the scheme into operation is a capital fund of £20,000. With that amount in hand, activities will be commenced, and many families who are now largely dependent upon relief work for a living will be placed in a position assuring them of sustenance Immediately, and a prospect of firmly establishing themselves as permanent producers in the not distant future. For weeks past Mr Bryant has been conducting an active campaign on behalf of the fund, and lie has met with a gratifying response from all classes of the community, who are satisfied that the project offers a practical solution for one of our most urgent social problems. At the end of last week the donations towards tiie capital fund aggregated upwards of £19,100. About £9OO remains to be raised. The launching of the scheme depends upon I lie receipt of that comparatively small margin. Contributors have been assured that failing tiie full amount being available their subscriptions will be returned and the project definitely abandoned. Wc fool suit that the people of the province will not contemplate such a development when success seems almost within grasp. The amount required is so small, and t tie number of non-contributors so large, that it would savour of the disgraceful if Hie required amount were not made up, seeing that such a considerable sum has been collected chiefly by the herculean exertions of one man actuated by purely philanthropic motives. A little sacrifice, involving maybe a modicum of self-denial, on the' part of some will ensure the launching of a project fraught with hope and happiness to many. llio scheme is in every way commendable, and worthy of general mid liberal support. Dona I ions, however small, forwarded to The Waikato Times office, will be duly acknowledged. Prompt action is desirable.
