Mr Frank Aiken, Minister of Defence, was even more explicit. It is reported that he remarked to the Dublin correspondent of the Paris newspaper Le Petit Journal: “Ireland will be an independent republic when you come here again. That is the will of the Irish people which will be expressed at the election on January 24."
