CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIP.
FOURTH DAY’S PLAY. The Manawatu Evening Standard writes: In the handicap singles (A grade), Mrs Bartlett (Hamilton) 1, beat Hartnell (New Plymouth) scr., after a keenly-contested game. Mrs Bartlett picked up a long shot and made a break of six. Hartnell picked up a shot, but owing to the fast condition of the lawn play at this stage was rather slow. Mrs Bartlett again hit in and made a break of eight. The captain then took control and moved his clip on to four back. Mrs Bartlett picked up another long shot, finally putting her clip on the penultimate hoop. Hartnell pegged Mrs Bartlett’s red brail, leaving yellow with two hoops and peg to make. Hartnell could not prevail against his opponent’s brilliant shooting and Mrs Bartlett got in a long shot to finish the game 26—19. Mrs Bartlett, who won the North Island Ladles’ Cup seven years ago at Wellington, has been playing consistently throughout the tournament, a feature of her game being her good shooting.
