THE TRAFFIC BRIDGE.

BTATE OF THE STRUCTURE. FARMERS’ UNION INTERESTED. The present state of the Hamilton traffic bridge was the subject of brief discussion at a meeting of the Waikato Sub-Provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday, Mr A. 0. Haycock (Horsham Downs), said that for a number of months two men had been constantly on duty there, and a certain amount of expense must have been involved. He thought that the meeting might take some action lo assist the local bodies concerned with the bridge to get what they wanted. Mr C. J. Phair (Hamilton) stated that the bridge had always been declared unsafe, as the * expansion joint had never worked properly. The opinion that the sub-provinoial executive should co-operate with the local bodies in their efforts to remedy the trouble, in view of the Increasing instability of the bridge, was expressed by Mr J. H. Furniss, the president. Mr Phair said that the executive would put themselves in an awkward position as they had fought for derating, and work on the bridge would entail a special loan. With a view to obtaining further information in the meantime, relative to the position, Mr Haycock gave notice of his Intention to bring the matter up again at the next executive meeting.
