RHODES SCHOLARS.
A STATEMENT DENIECV DECISION UNANIMOUS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Acting under instructions from the chairman of the Rhodes Scholarships Selection Committee, the GovernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, the secretary of the committee states in reference y to the message from Christchurch yes- i terday that the telegram was inaccurate and was calculated to give an altogether wrong impression of a meet- ' ing that was really private, and that was perfectly harmonious. The ultimate decision of the committee waa unanimous. In view of the information which was before members, the statement that “there was no lack of suitable candidates” was at least surprising. It was the intention of the committee to publish the reasons that led to the decision of this year’s meeting. The telegram referred to was one of an Interview with Professor Macmillan Brown, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, and a member of the Selection Committee. Professor Brown said there was no lack of suitable candidates, some of whom would again be available for nomination next year. Three members of the committee, said the professor, favoured the appointment of one candidate, and two favoured another candidate, while the rest of the committee were at sixes and sevens.
