TE AROHA. Thames Valley Drainage Board. At the November meeting of the Thames Valley Drainage Board a letter was read from 'the Hauraki plains Board agreeing to support the representations against the closing of the Drainage Department* The Hon. - G. E. MaoMillan wrote that the Minister of Internal Affairs regretted it was not possible to deal with the Land Drainage Bill this season. Mr McMorran, drainage engineer, notified that the Tahuna subsidy of £3OO had been placed on the estimates. It was resolved to ask the Chief Drainage Engineer if a suitable dredge was available for dredging the Waitoa River, and the approximate cost of the work. Fire Brigade Demonstration. The Auokland Fire Brigades’ Asso*clation has decided to hold its annual demonstration at Te Aroha at Easter. The competitions will be on a large scale, as over 150 firemen will take part. • Unemployment. At the weekly meeting of the local Unemployment Committee the Unemployment Board advised that in order to assist relief workers over the Christmas, and New Year holiday period work under Scheme 5 would be suspended in the weeks ending December 31 and January 7.—The following resolution was passed:—“That it be a recommendation of this committee that tile wages due to be paid for the two weeks, be disbursed in two amounts, if it can be arranged by the employing bodies. The postmaster, Mr A. L. Willis, notified that nine names had been removed from the register, leaving the total of unemployed at 126. Kennel Club Luncheon. At a complimentary luncheon tendered to exhibitors and supporters by the newly-formed Kennel Club, Mr J. D. Rivett presided. There was an attendance of over one hundred. The club’s patron, Mr J. A. Hepburn, presented to Mrs N. Wade, wife of the Judge, a beautiful bouquet of red flowers. Mr Wade congratulated the club on its very successful show. He said the class of dogs shown was excellent, and among certain breeds the dogs were the best in the Dominion, while the Sealyhom Terriers would hold their own with anything in Australasia. Tlie president, Mr Rivett, presented the cups and trophies won at the show. Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr G. H. Nicholis presided at a meeting of the executive of the Te Aroha branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. it was resolved to purchase 750 poppies to be made in Auckland for April next, and that the secretary should apply to the National War Funds Council for a grant towards the relief of distress. Mr G. Ilessell was appointed treasurer in place of Mr E. Ilorrobin, who has left the district. MORRINSVILLE. j
Chambop of Commerce. At the December meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce, an address on the various unemployment relief schemes was given by the postmaster, Mr R. D. Wilson. The Chamber approved of the action of llie business people affected by the Shops and unices’ Act, the majority of whom have decided to have ttie late night on Saturday in Christmas and New Year weeks, and to observe the Christmas week halfholiday on 1 lie Wednesday. This decision was made for benefit of Hie fa rmers. Methodist Gathering. A very successful “bank-note and silver tree" was held by the Morrinsville Methodist Church in conjunction wilh a concert at the Parish Rail on Tuesday evening, when about £7.‘> was raised for Hie funds.
