SOUTH AUCKLAND CENTRE ROTORUA IN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES TOURNAMENT DATES APPROVED. Many matters relative to the game •of bowls in this district were discussed at, a meeting of the South Auckland Bowling Centre in Hamilton last night. The president. Mr J. T. North, of Te Awamutu. presided over an attendance of ten delegates. With reference to the marking of bowls the Dominion Council has torwarded the following ruling lo the Christchurch Centre: —“Bowls which are in use and which hear a distinctive mark* on the large disc and a number on the small disc will be sufficients marked to comply with the regulations if the numbered disc is permanently marked with the owners' initials oi with a design similar to that on the large, disc. New bowls must bear a

similar distinctive mark on both discs . of each bowl." | It was decided lo send a copy of ! this ruling to all affiliated clubs. , Hardley Shield Match. j The Auckland Centre wrote stating i that they found it impossible to meet | the Soutii Auckland representatives for j the Hardley Shield before Christmas. — \ It was suggested that there should be j onlv one shield match in the season, j and the Auckland Centre recommended j that this should lie played at Hamit- . ton on Saturday, February 18. j The meeting decided to accept this | date. . ! The Rotorua Club sought an ex.- j planation as ,to why it was excluded from the Centre champion of champions competition. Mr G. S. Frost said that Rotorua had been given an opportunity to participate in this competition, bur, had declined. Several speakers expressed the opinion that Rotorua should be encouraged to take part in the champion i nf champions scries. It was suggested that Rotorua should endeavour to form a group with some of the Bay clubs rather than come into one or the other groups, which would mean considerable travelling. Mr W. Fraser moved that the Rotorua Club" should be notified that while thev had previously decided not to take part in the competition in question the Centre would be pleased to

arrange for them to participate in it. The Centre suggested that for this vear Rotorua should organise a group with the Tanealua, Whakatane, Te Puke, and Opotiki Clubs, the winners to take part in the competition final in February. The motion was carried. A Claudelands Protest. A protest at the postponement of the Hamilton group matches in the champion of champions competition to December 10 was entered by the Claudelands Club, who pointed out that they were holding their At Home” function on that date. It was explained that the Centre had no alternative but to take this step, and it was decided to write to the Claudelands Club expressing regret that this had been found necessary. The secretory reported bh&t to riate twenty-six clubs had forwarded their returns and fees, which were coming in very well this year. The Rotorua Club headed the list with 149 members, with Te Aroha .104, next in order. The question nf providing Centre certificates was before the meeting, and Messrs R. X. Pilkington an r l Fraser were appointed a sub-commit-tee tn prepare a suitable design and procure the certificates. Tournament Dates. Permission to conduct one day midweek tournaments on December 7 and 14 was granted the Hamilton East and Te Aroha clubs respectively. The applications of the Claudelands and Hamilton clubs for tournaments on January 2 were considered and it wadecided to allow these clubs to conduct tournaments on January - and 3, the clubs to arrange which is to have ■the first day, and which is to take the second day" If no such arrangement can be made they are both to he per mit-ted to play on January 2. u Frankton club’s application to conduct a pairs tournament on January 2 was refused. TOe Te Aroha MorrlnsvUe Otorohanga, Frankton and Whltiora clubs' requests for tournaments on January 30 were approved.
