UNDERGROWTH ABLAZE.
SCHOOL HOSTEL THREATENED. OUTBREAK ON RIVER BANK. BRIGADE EFFECTS GOOD SAVE. A spectacular outbreak of fire occurred on the river bank below the Hamilton High School Girls’ Hostel shortly after 2 o’clock this afternoon, resulting in the destruction o'f a considerable area of shrubs and bush. It is thought that the fire was started by a spark l'roni a passing engine. Fanned by a strong westerly wind the flames swept through the undergrowth, and when the Fire Brigade arrived a large area was blazing. For a time the hostel outbuildings were in danger, but through the strenuous efforts of the brigade the spread of the flames was checked. Twice > the fire broke out in fresh places, but it was soon subdued. As it was, tbe fire burned the scrub up to within a few feet of the buildings. Apart from the destruction of the bush almost down to the water’s edge, no damage was done.
