TO-NIGHT’S PROGRAMMES
OIVIC THEATRE. There will he no pictures at the Civic Theatre to-night owing to the theatre being otherwise engaged. “ Is My Face Red?” will open at the theatre to-morrow. Many newspaper dramas have been shown lately, but this one strikes an entirely new note that cannot but intrigue the film-goer. The picture deals with the career of a newspaper columnist, who deals in scandal for a living, with very dramatic results. The principal artist is Ricardo Gortez and he is supported by Helen Twelvetrees, who is cast as a show girl, who provides her lover with manyof his tips. STRAND THEATRE. “ Ducky Girl” concerns a young man who has just come to the throne of a liny kingdom in the Balkins, the treasury of which ijs empty. With an American efficiency expert, whom he has called in to help him out of a crisis, the king leaves for London to raise some money on the crown jewels. Here lie meets with a series of humorous adventures, a mix-up in a duke-s house providing exceptionally fine entertainment. Gene Gerrard in the principal role adds considerably to his reputation as a comedian. “ England Awake” draws a parallel between the stormy years following the -Napoleonic wars and the present day, and seeks, by showing the wonderful development of the Empire in the next cenl'ury to show that one may expect a glorious emergence from present-day difficulties. The ‘film pays a striking tribute to British courage. " His ROYAL HIGHNESS.” -George Wallace to be seen at the Strand Theatre on Friday in “ His Royal Highness,” is an extraordinarily versatile man. For many years he not only played leading comedy roles in revue on the Australian and New Zealand stage, -but has acted as producer as well. He paints his own scenery, designs his own ‘props,’ often writes his own songs—both lyrics and music, and in his spare moments he is a sculptor. He is also an expert on roller skates, and he turned this to good account in “His Royal Highness." THEATRE ROYAL. , Wynne Gibson, the talented young actress who stepped from the musical comedy stage to success In the talkies, lias her first big starring role in “The Strange Case of -Clara Deane." In this production, Miss Gibsojj attains to heights that will bring her great fame in the annals of the photo-play. The story, which is that of an overwhelming mother love, takes the audience over a span of about twenty years, and the gradual metamorphosis of the , hapless Clara Deane through the years ot trying circumstances is shown realistically. The strong supporting cast includes Francis Dee and Pat O’Brien. 1 ' ' " OLD VIENNA." Dancing, laughing, singing, a blaze of colour and spectacle in the most romantic city in the world, is the background to the musical romance “Old Vienna,” which will be screened at the Theatre Royal to-morrow night. This film, featuring Lilian Harvey, Conrad Veidi, Lil Dggover and Henry Carat, is the love story of a little milliner for the Czar of Russia, and a romance that is shattered when the royal lover is Carried back to his own country through force of circumstances. ;f ROXY THEATRE. “ The -Miracle Man” was an outstanding success as a silent film some years ago, and the talkie version, which will be scraened at the Roxy Theatre to-night, is even more satisfying. it lolls a story of great heart interest, making a strong appeal to everybody, and bolding the attention of the audience from beginning to end. The work of the players is of a high standard.
