NATIONAL ART GALLERY.
AND DOMINION MUSEUM. CONTRACT OF £162,218 ACCEPTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday, y The erection of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum is to be completed within three years of March 31 next. The Board of Trustees tliis afternoon signed a contract with the Fletcher Construction Company, Limited, for the work at a cost of £162,218, the hoard reserving the right to omit a portion of the building of an approximate value of £20,000, the decision being dependent upon the finance available at the end of 12 months. The highest tender was £187,060. The total cost of the scheme, with preliminary and other expenses, is approximately £185,000. The board has cash in hand amounting to £57,000. Subscriptions promised are expected, conservatively, to yield £13,000. With the interest and a Government subsidy of £1 for £l, the board believes it is assured of £149,000 being available. It is anticipated that, as the work progresses, citizens will be inspired to make further contributions. The board was influenced In its decision to proceed with the work by the fact that the undertaking will stimulate the building industry generally. The only imported material! to be used will be steel and copper.
