GUILTY OF SPEEDING.

ON THE BOMBAY DEVIATION. CHAIRMAN OF RAILWAYS BOARD. PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. In the Police Court H. H. Sterling, chairman of the Railways Board, was charged with speeding on the. Bombay deviation. The inspector said he followed defendant’s car at a speed of 40 miles an hour. When passing the Pukekohe intersection lie passed two cars at a speed of 35 miles an hour. lie stopped defendant and asked for his license and told him lie was exceeding the limti When defendant continued his journey he travelled over the remainder of the deviation at 35 miles an hour. Defendant entered a pica of guilty, lie said his car was running downhill and he did not notice the speed at which it was travelling. lie did not see notices limiting the speed to 30 miles an hour, but one Auckland Automobile sign asking motorists to reduce speed. He attempted to do this. He submitted that as the signs were not erected by the Highways Board the by-law was rendered ineffective and he suggested that the information should be dismissed. A fine Qf £ I 10s was imposed.
