WARNING AGAINST HASTY ACTS. “Any attempt to subdivide one in-jl'-Kiual State within existing accidental boundaries is anti-Australian, a menace to the Australian nation, a perpetuation of past errors, and retrograde action against the interests of countless unborn Australians," declared Dr. F. Watson, in a paper before the geography and oceanography section, at the Science Congress in Sydney. “This is my considered opinion of any movements like the current agitation of the Country Party in Mow South Wales.’’ Neil tier must piecework subdivision be permitted, said Dr Watson, or else the “eyes'’ would be picked out of Australia for new Federal units, and the nation be compelled to carry the less favoured areas as territories or heavily subsidised Federal units. Readjustment of boundaries and rcsubdhision must be made by a scudjudicial commissioner or commissioners jo all Australia, simultaneously. Difficult to Support. Professor .Macdonald Holmes said that whatever was done by way of j creation of new Slates in New South Wales would have its repercussions throughout Australia. Various principles might be adopted in determining boundaries, such as making eacn Slate somewhat scli-supporting. If Sydney were eliminated, New South Wales might be fairly easily divided into three States, north, central and south, as regard population and certain other factors, but t!, would he difficult to make them self-supporting states.
