At Hamilton, Bert Pearson, an 18-year-old school student, Broke the Olympic 100 metres record in the semi-final of the Canadian trials in 10J seconds, being -a flfth of a second slower than Williams’ world record.

Williams was permitted to go to, Los Angelas without competing in the trials.
