ATTRACTIVE FOOTBALL. '3 I AT BEDDON PARK. RENOWN IMPRESS LOCALLY. (By "Nemo.") The meeting of Renown and Wanderers at Seddon Park last Saturday was a curious mixture of good, bad, and brilliant football, and fortunately, the bad patches were in the minority. At the outset the football was poor. Neither side seemed to settle down to any combination. Then the Wanderers woke up and that clever winger Schonau soon gave evidence that he had. lost none, of last season’s skill. It is remarkable that game after game this player gets so little of the ball. The same all last season. Properly utilised, he is a match winner. During their spell of brilliance the Wanderers scored, then faded away, but as they faded out so the Renown team suddenly realised that in Orman and R. Bate they had a wonderfully, effective right wing which they continually used. And so they scored one goal each, and now back to the listless game that started. -Thebe ' was a spurt towards half-time, however, and both sides were giving of their best and some sparkling football was seen. The second half was quite good, both sides going all out for (he winning'goal and when the Wanderers Scored things looked bright, but not for -long, for again Renown equalised. On the run of play a draw was a fair result, for neither side could claim any material advantage over the Other. The Players. Pot the Wanderers Raven in goal had not much to do, he is Improving In every game and although he should have saved the first goal, he need not be discouraged. Of the two fullbacks, Gardiner was the pitok, Indeed, he was the best player in the Wanderers’ team, and right through played a very fine game. King was safe but a trifle slow. Smith and Caldwell w’ere the pick of the half line, the latter being very strong In defence, but Smith should learn to part with the ball more quickly. Bullock has not yet produced his best, nevertheless with the former two he completed a solid half-back line. Black was the best forward, and In an unaccustomed position played a very fine game besides scoring two goals. Gavaye will need to improve -on this display to justify his selection for the Brown Shield team. Schonau, In his first appearance this season, showed he has retained his skill of last season. He should secure much more of the ball than he does. Kennedy was useful without attaining brilliance. He might have scored one if not two - goals, but appeared over -anxious “ to make sure." Clarkson was a trier, but lacks experience. The Wanderers would do well to restore Rogers to the outside right position.. The Renown Team. The Renowr. ass a/ well balanced team, and will probably prove this leason’s champions. Dryburgh did not Impress as a goalkeeper, and might easily have lost his side the game had the Wanderer’s forwards been dangerous near goal. Perrie and Garrick are two resolute and reliable fullbacks. They gave nothing away. Robertson was a -good centre-half. Hall / and Pollock were safe, the latter playing out of .position gave a very creditable display. The strength of the Renown team was chiefly in their forward line. The five forwards on this occasion have each represented South Auokland. Orman played well and was delightful to watch. Latimer retains all his -01-d skill and craft, and was ever in the thick of the fray. J. , Bate was not so clever as -his front- » line confreres, but was quite useful, while Adams made a successful reappearance in senior football. Athletlo v. United. In the curtain-raiser some good football was witnessed, and although United were successful they had to fight very hard to overcome the babes of the competition. In the last 20 minutes of this game the Athletlo forwards .were brilliant, and with any luck at all would have -saved the game. Alex. Crsnb played a particularly clever game. In the forward line, while Haycock was outstanding for the winners. .• A .• , 9 In Cup and League matches during the season 1931-32 the Arsenal players in home and away matches performed before over 1,750,000 spectators.
