THEFT OF HANDBAGS.
STOLEN IN DUNEDIN SHOPS. MAN AND WIFE SENTENCED. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Pleading guilty to five charges of theft of hand-bags containing money from customers in city shops, Florence May Beattie, married, middle-aged, was sentenced in the Police Court to a year’s reformative detention. Her husband, James Watson Beattie, was sentenced to ; three months in gaol on one charge of receiving £3 from her, the Magistrate remarking that 'he must have been aware of his wife’s •criminal practice in bringing the bags home. The police stated that there had been repeated complaints, one ‘lady losing a bag containing £l2. They found 19 bags at accused’s home, and she admitted the theft of 13. Ten years ago both accused were convicted at Christchurch of theft from clothes lines. On behalf of the female accused it was stated that there was a family of two little girls, and the woman had earned respect as an organist at St. Mary's Church, Mornington. Counsel claimed that she was a kleptomaniac, but the Magistrate said the facts ruled out impulse.
