DAIRY COMPANIES

OVERLAPPING OF ROUTES. "REMEDY IN HANDS OF FARMERS” The ciucstlon of overlapping by dairy companies was brought forward by Mr A. Harris at the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers’ Association, in Hamilton yesterday. Mr Harris contended that overlapping was causing a great deal of strife- He knew of one road where four companies operated to four suppliers. This sort of thing, which went on in greater or lesser scale all over the country, lessened the quality of the cream and therefore gave a lower return to tho farmer. If the factories did not get. quality cream they could not make quality butter. The extra cartage also caused an increase in the cost of the upkeep of roads. The only way to solve the problem was to cut dairy districts into wards. Mr W. Hollis, Hlnuera, maintained that the only way to prevent overlapping was for the county council affected to allow only one company to operate on a road. Mr G. J. Arnold. Rav of Islands, said the matter was in the hands of the farmers, county councils and the. Main Highways Hoard. If the farmers wanted to stop it they could. If the farmers tolerated it —well, let them foot the bill. There being no further discussion the question lapsed.
