Members of the Timaru rocket brigade, many of them were in the boat which went out to man the and City of Perth on May 11, 1882, under the command of the harbourmaster, Captain Mills. The boat overturned and most of the crew were drowned, Captain Mills dying from -his injuries after being picked up. Both ships went ashore.
