AFPLES FOR OPERA SINGERS. CEREMONY AT NELSON. The visit of Williamson’s GilbertSullivan Company to Nelson recently was quite an event for the town, and eacli of the four performances in the very adequate and piodern theatre was packed to the doors. On Hie final night, when “The Yeoman of the Guard" was performed, there was not a scat lo spare in the theatre, and the scene was one of enthusiasm for everyone concerned. At Hie conclusion of the performance a novel “stunt” caused much laughter and applause. What was said lo lie the millionth case of apples packed for export in Hie districl was presented lo the company in quite a unique manner. First of all there, was a special basket of rosy-cheeked apples for Mr Ivan Monies. fho comedian of the company; tucn was handed over Ihe footlights a string of apples, one for each member of Ihe company. The case was in the orchestra well, and as (lie apples were brought out it was found that they were all'strung together, so that by ‘the time the- whole- length of the line was paid out Ihe apples formed a glowing garland, suspended round Ihe shoulders of every member of.lhe company.
