GALE AND RAIN.
SEVERAL NARROW ESCAPES. . CAPSIZE OF . A DINGHY. AUCKLAND, Friday. *' Two men were in a small launch which broke away from Oralcci at daybreak and, with its engine broken, was carried rapidly toward the eastern tide deflector. If the launch had been driven ashore there, its oecupanls would have been in considerable danger, but fortunately a warning was sent in time for a launch to be sent to their rescue. A dinghy containing two men capsized. Both men were picked up by a Harbour Board launch. The ferry steamers experienced the full force of the conditions, and often shuddered convulsively as they struck seas. At the Western Viaduct the steamer Hikurangi swung out from the wharf and collided with the scow Seagull, snapping her bowsprit in two.
TWO LAUNCHES WRECKED. SEVERAL DINGHYS MISSING. RUSSELL, Thursday. Two passenger launches belonging to A. E. Fuller and Sons, the Knoxle IL and the Alba, broke away from the wharf, and were finally located piled upon the beach at Waitangi. One dinghy is reported to be smashed and seven or eight, are missing. The auxiliary vessel Waka, berthed ill the Russell Wharf, but was forced to leave again about 1 a.m. owing to a heavy squall which parted all mooring lines except one. The vessel spent the remainder of the night at Opua.
