LAND SETTLEMENT BOARDS
The land settlement scheme for unemployed controlled by local boards which is ’outlined on this page demands attention. It will be noted that the proposals are solely for the benefit of the unemployed, members of a board and supervisors giving their servloes free, and those subscribing to the funds receiving not more than five per cent, for the loan of their money. It is necessary, however, for the proposed boards to get special legislation before they can operate. If land settlement is to be made a success the Government must have the support of local bodies and act on local advice. We have too many examples of how any deviation from this policy leads to disaster. Under the scheme suggested the local knowledge would be available in its most comprehensive form. The scheme is one which proposes to help private Individuals to help themselves and thus aid the Government and therefore the general public. Taking all the circumstances Into consideration it is to be hoped that the Government will see its way clear to introduce the necessary legislation before the end of the present emergency session.
