HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Every right-thinking taxpayer, of every political shade will realise the truth of "Observer’s" comments in the Times on Tuesday when he j draws attention to the shocking com- ! position of tho present House of Rej presentatives. When members speak and act like rabble and then squeal pathetically because a commission of business, men suggests that economy j cuts should apply to Parliamentarians j it is high time for the taxpayer to sit 'up and take notice. Farmers, commercial men, civil servants and workers to-day seem to he unanimous that a drastic curtailment In the member- I ship of the House is imperative, Ob- i viously such a movement will never come from the House itself if we wait till the crack of doom. How, then, to alter the constitution of the House? It is doubtful whether pressure ot! public opinion by petitions and deputations would produce any effect. If a petition signed by every elector in the country was forwarded to Mr 'Forbes it is practically certain nothing would he done. Personally I am of opinion that a Dominion-wide cam- j paign should be started for the reduction of the present personnel by half. It would be advisable to forward a huge petition direct to the King praying for a Royal Commission to investigate the matter.—l am, etc., GET BUSY.
