DEMOCRAT NOMINATION. SMITH-ROOSEVELT CAMPAIGN. DIVISION OF HONOURS. Unitea Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. NEW YORK, April 26. Incomplete returns of the primary elections in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania to-day indicate that Mr Franklin Roosevelt and Mr Alfred Smith, rivals for the Democrat, nomination, have divided the honours. Mr Roosevelt apparently has won a substantial majority of Pensylvania’s 76 Presidential nominating delegates, while Mr Smith has made a clean sweep of Massachusetts’ 36 delegates. Taking previous victories into account Mr Roosevelt, retains a commanding majority of pledged delegates. However, his decisive defeat in Massachusetts is a severe blow to his prestige.
LATER. ROOSEVELT’S DIFFICULTIES. MR SMITH’S SUCCESSES. BETTER THAN ANTICIPATED. United Pres*- Assn. — Ele*. Tel Cnn.vrlgnt, (Received April 2S, 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, April 27. Mr Roosevelt’s Presidential campaign is up against its first real disappointment by a smashing defeat in Massachusetts and the prospect of a narrow victory at the best in Pennsylvania. In the delegate-choosing primaries in both States on Tuesday, Mr A 1 Smith stemmed the onrush of the leading Democrat aspirant with a showing superior to the expectations of any but his own partisans, a showing which revived notably the movement to prevent Mr Roosevelt’s nomination in the National Convention, despite his enormous lead in delegate strength. Mr Hoover was almost assured of 109 Republican delegate votes In both States.
