Scolt, editor of the Manchester Guardian, with his son Richard, aged 16, embarked in a dinghy to board a yacht on Lake Windemere. The dingliy capsized and Richard clung to the keel. Mr Scott, who was a strong swimmer, attempted to reach the shore, but was drowned.

Mr Scott recently succeeded his father to the editorial chair of the Manchester Guardian. His father, who died a few months ago, was acknowledged to be one of the most brilliant of British Journalists, and his death was widely deplored.
