DWINDLING TRADE.

AUSTRALIA CONCERNED. DEVELOPMENT DESIRED. MATTERS UNDER CONSIDERATION United Press l - Assn.--Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received April 22, 12.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, April 22. The serious decline in trade between Australia and New Zealand in the past five years is causing concern to the Commonwealth Government, and an investigation is to be made at an early date to discover means for improving the position. Whereas in 1925-26 Australia exported goods worth £5,157,000 to New Zealand, the total value of exports for 1930 and 1931 had fallen to £2,970,000. A corresponding decline is evidenced in imports from New Zealand. One factor in the loss of trade by Australia is said to be New’ Zealand's increased grain imports from Canada. The appointment of an Australian Trade Commissioner to New Zealand is being strongly urged here. It is also officially stated that Australia is losing trade in the Southern Pacific Islands, due to New Zealand ‘trade development. It is regarded as possible that a trade treaty with New Zealand will he discussed after the Ottawa Conference.
