DEATH OF A PILOT.

WAS IT SUICIDE? AMERICAN POLICE INVESTIGATING, MRS MILLAR, CAPTAIN LANCASTER. PROMINENT PERSONS DETAINED. United Press Assn. —-Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received April' 22, 8.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 21. A message from Miami states that Mrs Keith Millar and Captain Lancaster are held in the county gaol for an .investigation into the shooting of Haden Clark, an aeroplane pilot here. Statements given to the police by the two ascribed the wound in Clark’s head to a suicide attempt. Mrs Millar said she was awakened shortly before daylight by Captain Lancaster, who told her Clark had shot himself. She said she went with Lancaster to where Clark's body lay and saw a pistol under the body. Lancaster said he and Clark retired to a porch, where’ they slept about 12.45 a.m. and "we talked about an hour of home troubles -and several other things.” He was awakened by a report some time later and heard Clark making funny noises. “ I turned on the light, and his face was covered with blood, and he was lying on his side. I ran to Mrs Millar’s room and got her up.” Later he called a physician and an attorney. Clark was taken to the hospital. Mrs Clark, mother of the injured man, said the. police showed her a type-written note to Mrs Millar, which said: “I cannot stand the economic pressure. Will you please sustain my mother in her deep grief.” Mrs Clark said she could not be sure the signature was her son’s, but she expressed the opinion that he had shot himself. Mrs Millar, the wife of a Sydney journalist, and Captain Lancaster, came into prominence some time ago by making a flight from Britain to Australia. Later the pair left fy America, where they have since resided, and have occasionally appeared in the news since on account of stunts they have undertaken.
