OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN A. JACK A. AUSTRALIAN WAR HERO, United Press Assn. — Elec. Tel. ffopyrig-ht. MELBOURNE. .Tan. 17. The'death has occurred of Captain A. Jacka, V.C. The late Captain Albert Jacka, V.C., M.C. and bar, was born in Victoria. He was. a lance-corporal in the 'l4th Battalion, A.1.F., and was the first Australian lo win the Victoria Cross in the Great War. This distinction was awarlled him for “ most conspicuous bravery ” on the night of May 1920 at' Courtney’s Post, Gallipoli.
With four ■privates he was holding a portion of a trench and the party was heavily attacked. Jacka’s four companions were killed or wounded, and, single-handed he disposed of seven Turks, shooting five and bayonettlng the others. MRB CATHERINE ARMSTRONG. AUCKLAND, Monday. The death has occurred of Mrs Catherine Armstrong, Point - Chevalier, at tlie age of 82 years. Mrs Armstrong Was born in Auckland and in 1870 was married to Air Walter Henry Armstrong, one of the early solicitors in Auckland.
