MOTOR THIEVES.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I was much impressed by the remarks of “Motorist” in yesterday’s Times re motor thieves. As far as penalties for the offence arc concerned our laws are most Inadequate, and revision is only one way of stopping the crime. As to authorities being provided with transport facilities to pursue the thieves, they have ample access to means of transport In taxls' ? or commandeering private cars, so why let the State be placed to additional expenditure in organising a mobile force? The only true solution of the problem is to 'ask the motorists to form themselves into a vigilance committee to try and suppress the nuisance. The latest cars, which are the prey of this type ot criminah'are all provided with ignition and door locks. Some have gear locks fitted, and yet our public, who are so annoyed at our police force for not catching offenders, still neglect to use these' locks when they park their vehicles, and the (average owner cannot tell the police or any other authority the registration number, and has to look up registration papers, etc., to find, same, thils'-offsetting the advantages of a mobile force. The true solution. rests with the motorists to take every precaution and give the police or traffic officers every assistance when . they have information which might prove useful.—l am, etc., ONLOOKER.
