Colonel Eric Campbell, leader of the New Guard, was served with a summons this evening at the instance of the Lang Government, 'charging hirh with using insulting words in the course of a speech yesterday.

The action was taken under Section BA. of the Vagrancy Act, 1902, which legislates against dangerous and riotous statements.

Colonel Campbell will appear In Court to-morrow. maximum fine for the offence, providing the charge Is proved, Is £5, and a person may in addition be bound over to be of good behaviour for twelve months, or, falling such a bond being entered Into, a person may be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. The sudden action Is the culmination of the Government’s attention lo Campbell’s speeches. Ministers conferred during the last two days with the Grown Law officers and police officials. Interviewed after the summons had been served itlie leader of the New Guard said: “I am just amused, cf course. My defence will bring some facts before the publio that should be highly amusing.”
