FATALITY AT ELLERSLIE. H. E. STOCKLEY'B DEATH. \ l f fall in opening race. (Special to Times.) } AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The racing at Ellerslie to-day, the •econd day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer meeting, was marred bv an accident, as a result of which the jockey, H. B. Stockley, sustained injuries from which he died on his way to the Auckland Hospital. Stockley had the mount on Exaggeration in the Fergusson Handicap, the opening event on the programme. Shortly after the field had passed the six furlong post, after covering two furlongs of the mile journey, Exaggeration, who was among the forward runners, fell and the mishap caused Bronze Tray, ridden by 0. Mclnally, of Hamilton, to be interfered with to such an extent that he was pulled up. The ambulance men hurried to the scene and gave Stockley what attention they could on the spot. Stockley, who was attached to J. Fryer’s stable, at Hawera, was a most promising apprentice rider. lie had ridden several winners this year. Little Doubt, who scored a double at Te Rapa in the winter and later won the Avondale Cup and who was also successful at the Dargaville Club’s meeting on the same course, was a Taranaki galloper the deceased horseman was prominently associated with. Stockley was 17 years of age and resided with his parents close to Stratford.
