ELSTOW-OTWAY. Euchre and Dance. At the Elstow Hall Society's euchre and dance there was a good crowd of euchre players, but not many dancers. Mrs Glover’s orchestra provided the dance music, and extras were played by Mr Hartley. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs 11. Blackford and Mr Hartley, the lesser honours going to Mr H. Andrew and Mrs Dailies. Mr J. Martelli made an efficient M.C. Football Club. The Elstow Football Club la eld Its Anal meeting for the season last week. The recent function in aid of the club's funds resulted in a proAt of over £B. The club has about £2O in hand. No decision as to the disposal of this sum will lie made until the next football season. Relief of Distress. The unemployed relief lorry is to visit the district on Thursday to collect offerings for the relief of distress among tlie unemployed in Te Aroha. MATANGI. Successful Concert. A very enjoyable and successful concert, arranged by Mr Albert Bryant, to augment the funds of the Matangi Ladies' Guild, was given in tlie hall. Rev. A. O. Harris, on behalf of the guild, thanked the performers and Mr Bryant for the trouble he had taken in arranging such a good programme. Supper was provided and was served by the ladies of the guild. Those contributing to the programme were: Misses McLachlan, instrumental trio; Mr Reg. Cook, songs at the piano; Miss C. McLachlan, violin solo; Mrs Gordon Brown, songs; Miss Phyllis Torpy, monologues; Mr K. Ewitt, songs; Miss Y. McLachlan, 'cello solo; Mr H. Absolum, humorous items; Mrs Alderman, songs; Mr Albert Bryant, piano solos. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Absolum and Mr Albert Bryant. TE PUNINGA. Tho Brookfield Hall. Improvements have been carried out to the interior of the Brookfield Hall, No. 7 Road, by working bees of settlers. Tlie interior of the hall and porch lias been lined to a height of 7ft. at a cost, of £l2. Another step towards popularising the hall will be the metalling of tlie clay section of No. 4 Road, which is at present impassable. The County Council hopes to get funds to have the road metalled this summer. There is to be a Sunday School social in the hall on Friday. GLEN MASSEY. Church Services. Two well-attended services we ,- e held In tho church on Sunday. In the afternoon the Rev. Cleary preached at the monthly Anglican service, and in the evening Rev. Haddon conducted the Methodist service. Tho Weather. Glorious weather was experienced over the week-end and the opportunity was taken advantage of by many to get, their gardens under way. Growth is still very backward in tho pastures, but they look very healthy and should come away well. Tho Mine. Owing to lack of orders the mine Is working very short time. Last week only two days were worked and ■there will not he any more this week, as far as is known. OTOROHANGA. Porsonal. Mr D. Anderson, of the Post Office staff, Is on his annual leave. Maintenance Order. Alexander Ernest Wilson-Smith,. formerly a prominent land agent at Otorohanga, was arrested last week In Christchurch on a charge of failing to support his wife and child. He was remanded to appear in Auckland. Bail was granted. Lambing Season Over. The lambing season may be said to he over, and this season’s young lambs are looking in healthy condition. Marking and docking are the principal activities on the sheep holdings. Present returns indicate an average percentage of 85, which is well up to the average. Wool Growth. The ewes and dry sheep are carrying satisfactory fieeces. Shearing of the dry sheep will commence in the latter part of next month, and of the ewes early in November. Bereavement. Mr Arthur Fleming has suffered bereavement by the death of his mother, Mrs Mary Fleming, of Auckland.
