Yeswanl Singli and Deo Narayan were sentenced -to death, and Dala Pat t-o transportation for life, for the murder of Lieutenant liext and the attempted murder of Lieutenant Sheehan in the Punjab mail train on tlie night of July 22. The brutal murder of a British officer was committed on the Punjab mail train on -the night of July 22. Two officers, Lieutenant G. R. liext and Lieutenant Sheehan, who were tra/elling to Poona, were attacked and stabbed. Lieutenant liext was seriously wounded while lie was asleep, and died later from his injuries. Lieutenant Sheehan was severely wounded. Lieutenant Sheehan stated that lie was awakened by the barking of a dog which was in Hie same compartment. He saw two men, armed with daggers, who killed -the dog, and then attacked Lieutenant Hext and himself. Then they jumped from the train and disappeared in the jungle.
