'Hyades, dam of Prodice, Phaola and Ammon Ra, with her daughter Phaola, is at present at Westmere Stud, Wanganui. Both are to be mated this season with Captain Bunsby. The New Plymouth trainer, E. George, will lake a team of live horses to Avondale and Auckland meetings. Easter Time was to have formed one of the party, but after his poor showing on the first day at Wanganui, he was sent home. The others for the northern trip are Lady Quex, Royal Finance, Gibraltar, Merry Way, and Little Doubt.

View Halloa Is a Fordell trained three-year-old with decided possibilities. The Hunting Song gelding put in a great finishing run over the final stages of the Wanganui Guineas race, and in another stride he would have been In front of King Colossus, who Ailed second berth. K. Voitre rode a good race on View Halloo and oannot be blamed for not making an earlier run/

A New Zealand-bred filly, Cupidity, ran conspicuously in the first division of the Warrlston. Welter at the recent Caulfield meeting, but was defeated by Viol D’Amour. Cupidity Is by Psychology from Lovelock and cost 100 guineas as a yearling. She won a small race as a two-year-old, but It would not be surprising If she were to succeed over a distance.

The Australian-bred three-year-old filly Barbacan, by Top Gallant from Columbia, who is trained at Hawera by O. Cox for the Westmere studmaster Mr J. Donald, shaped promisingly in the maiden event at Wanganui, finishing witli a strong run into •third place. Barbacan raced only once last, season, and as tills was her second start she may turn out useful. She returned to Hawera without waiting for ’the second day at Wanganui.

Although a substantial cut in stakes has been announced by the Wellington Racing Club, the races arc still well worth winning. The club has Incurred heavy liabilities in the erection of stands and course equipment. What now appear to be extravagant ideas were Incurred in the days of loose purse strings, but extravagance may be a real asset in the long run, writes "Sentinel."

When the company is not ’too select something should be heard of Chlldsludy, the three-year-old gelding by Psychology-Paoanui, who is trained at Woodvllle by 11. Russell for owner-breeder Mr L. McKenzie. Childstudy was 'finishing on well in the Wanganui Guineas race, a length and a half behind the placed horses and well clear of Cricket Bat. Childstudy, who is a half-brother to the useful Royal Parade, was third in the Spring Hack Handicap on Saturday

Gay Court, who showed good form as a 'two-year-old last season without winning a race, made an auspicious start for ttie present term by winning the maiden race at Wanganui. lie was not troubled at any part of the Journey, and his opponents failed to test him. The Gainscourt—Polonaise gelding put up another good performance on Saturday, when lie heat all but Pomp in the Trial Hack Handicap. He will be racing at Avondale.

The four-year-old marc Land Court ('Grandcourt —Landrail), who as a foal went with her dam to Austral! i, picks up an occasional race at New South Wales country meetings. The latest was a division of the Flying Handicap, 4J furlongs, at Casino. Although apparently raced as a sprinter, it would seem from the company she keeps that In this category she !s in anything hut the same class as her half-sister by Finland, that line performer Chimera. Possibly later on she may develop into a hurdler of some note, like her half-brothers Landlord and Zippor.

■Bronze Eagle's appearance i:i the Avondale Hiilivas Is being looked furward to with very marked interest. That lie is going on the right way the Brazen Tofrida colt his Indicated by capable work on the tracks at, Takanini. Bronze Logic will underlake his classic eng .icemen, on Monday without the advantage of a race tills season, while 111 • Blenheim owned Croupier .Surveym—Pellet! who is looked upon as a serious rival, has had three Hidings ibis season ami has smveispii on eaeli occasion. Bronze Eagle was taken to A\oii(Kiie on ,-ii!m,:> mori.mg for a special gallop, and witii 11. Cray in the saddle, he was iTcdileii with six furlongs In t.ti —a smart •ffort.

La Poupee, who was one of last season's good youngsters, reappeared at Wan gam ' and, considering the luck she had in the race for the Flying Handicap, did well to finish fourth. She drew No. 2 at the post and, failing to jump away well, she was soon In a rearward position. La Poupee finished well, and with a better opportunity to use her early pace she should soon be in the money.

Fiji, L. G. Morris’s charge, who was to have contested the Wanganui Guineas for Mr T. A. Duncan, was withdrawn owing to an injury received in Ills loose-box. Although it is not regarded as serious, it, is particularly unfortunate, for Morris has had to cancel his Avondale trip, with Laughing Prince, Consent and Cadland, along with Fiji. These horses may, however, be seen out at Ellerslie. King Colossus promised well last season when he ran second in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes, and won the Avondale Stakes, but his form later went right off. When he paraded for the Wanganui Guineas it was apparent that he had done plenty of work. He was in a handy position in the running throughout, but was flat out at the finish to head off View Halloa for second, while making no impression on Croupier. It does not look as if 1 will be up to the best three-year-old class this season.

Though she was making only her second appearance over hurdles, Spearmiss justified her favouritism in the Okehu Hack Hurdles at Wanganui, though she took a risk at one or two of the obstacles. She was always in a handy position and when her rider took her to the front on the home turn it was only a question of her jumping the last fence to score Spearmiss was only recently purchased by Mr Mclv. Duncan, owner of Otalri, Llandudno, Risk, Trouble and several others, ' and she was raced In partnership with Mr J. MeIvelvle. The Greyspear mare should hold her own in better company than she scored over at Wanganui.

"So many opinions have been expressed about the length of Phar Lap’s stride, .that 'I decided to test it for what it was worth, over the concluding furlong of the Metnsic Stakes,” says a Melbourne writer. “The commencement of it found Phar Lap at his top, or very near it, and although he may have been cased a bit in the last stride or two, Pike kept the champion at it. This is proved by the three and a half lengths' margin lie won by, and, consequently, the 28 strides i counted him lo lake while completing the furlong must have some authentic value. They represent a shade less than 24 feet each stride. Over the same ground later in the afternoon, Ormolu, ridden right out, took 30 strides —two feet less a stride 'than Phar Lap cleared.”

The programme for the Waverley Racing Club’s Labour Day meeting is as follows: —Handicap Hack Hurdles, of £95; one mllo .and a-haif, Morton Memorial'Maiden, of £75; -six furlongs. Brewer Handicap, of £110; six furlongs. Wilson Hack Highweight, of £BS; seven furlongs. Waverley-Waitotara Cup, of £180; one mile and a-quarter. Flying Hack Handicap, of £80;. six furlongs. Moumahaki Hack Stakes, of £95; eight and a-quarter furlongs. Jackson Hack Memorial, of £80; five furlongs.

Croupier, winner of the Wanganui Guineas, has had seven races since he made his debut last season, and he has won the last six of them. In his first start at the Nelson meeting, he got left at the post, and eventually filled third position, hut for which he would undoubtedly have a sequence of unbroken wins. llis performance in the Wanganui Guineas was very impressive, and it was even better than it appears, for since the Grand National meeting he has suffered from a severe cold, and had not completely recovered in 'time for Thursday's race. One of the most impressed by the Surveyor colt s performance was his rider, H. Gray. It must have been a very interesting mount for Gray, as he will he riding Bronze Eagle In the Avondale Guineas against Croupier, writes "The Watcher,” Gray told trainer T. George after the race that his confidence in the ability of Bronze Eagle to beat Croupier in the Northern classic was badly shaken. Croupier not only has the requisite pace, hut he is also thoroughly seasoned with. racing, which is a great asset at this period of the season. Gray said that when Cricket Bat rushed up and 'took the lead from him In the race he was pleased, as he was hoping something would come along and relieve Croupier of the pacemaking. Then when he decided to feel the as they neared the straight, a “tchk tchk with his tongue wasj, all that was necessary to make Croupier bound to the front with the greatest ease. In fact he astonished Gray by the ease with which he gathered up his speed. 11. Wiggins will ride Croupier in 'the balance of his classic engagements. The colt, will start in the Flying Slakes on the opening at Avondale in which he has 7.8. ~ THE AVONDALE MEETINQ. FIELD IN THE GUINEAS. The following is the held for the AVON DA L E G UIN EA S.
