AN APPRECIATION.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—For the past 12 months the alley Ward patients of the Waikato ospllal have been greatly favoured y the considersle and kind attention f .several congregations of Hamilton i entertaining them by weekly con■rls, each cngregalion making them- • |\es responsible tor one month in K. year. The>e delightful and most i. C e| ' de services were the more (.jet ,!c ;t s they were rendered wit lint any eclat on behalf of the en■rlainors and were a .joy to the pat■n‘s who looked forward to them on ie one hand and on the other they ■ rmed the subject of m i.iy happy coners.ilions afterwards and we would <>!»<» that Hie -anio very kin I consid :at;on will be continued far the eomic \ ear. \\ • ire. etc., THiu 13 AII. WRESTLING. | (To the .Editor.) Sir. — Again, I crave ynur indulgence ; to allow me space in which to answer “Commonsense's" letter in to-night's' Issue of your paper. First. 1 would ■ ask him, “ Does lie knoxv the mean- ' ing of the word ‘Burlesque’"? If! he compares the present, day style with ■ Icatch-as-cat'di-can wrestling accord-' ! Ing to the rules, I think that he will; have to agree with me that the term j “ burlesque ” is the only one that can | be applied to the former. However, 1 | would like “ Commonsense ” to know that it takes a clever man to act a burlesque and make it appear real. Yet in this instance it is not so hard as I do not seriously believe that 10 per cent, of those attending these matches could state the difference between 1 “ catch-as-catch-can," “Cumberland,” i “ Greeco-Roman,” or Cornish styles of; wrestling, and that is. excluding ”ju-i Jitsu." Well, “Commonsense” it Is; 1 ! old saying that “ you can fool some i | of the crowd some of the lime, but you ■ ! can’t fool al! of the crowd all of the l time.” ” Now, “ Cmnnionsense.” can you explain why at loa-4 two AssoH.i , lions woku up and rcfiised Io pay out? j Because the burh'sques enacted on' ■ . those occasions were not quite g.»<>d ' enough to fool “all of the crowd ill; the lime.’’ In regard Io Hie “ big i houses" drawn at. Auckland. 1 would! point out that they are drawn by one i i man. a genuine wrestler who i> ways a trier as his record will show and that man is a resident ... \urk Lind for three \enrs and well known I all over Now Zealand. But “Co . sense,“ remember Hi il in no utiier . ! place in New Zealand due> wre- . n.r j i receive such support, as lu Auckland, j
Now I wish to make it quite clear that | I do not condemn these showmen nor i do I defend them, but I do blame the ; ; associations controlling these mat dies l If they appointed referees who would ! not be .afraid to exercise the powers } given Io them by declaring the match I j to bo “no bout” w’hen it is obviously ■ only an exhibition ami not a match as advertised. I am sure that, these i i “ showmen " when they found that their pockets were being affected. ! i would wrestle according to rules and : I wrestling would be seen and would , then be appreciated by both thos»e ' who understand Hie rules of wrest i ling and those who do not.—l am, etc., ! EX-WRESTLER. Frankton, August 12. —
