BIG EARTHQUAKE.
RECORDED IN SYDNEY. INTENSE AND PROLONGED. LOCALITY UNKNOWN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. SYDNEY, August 11. The Sydney and Riverview Observatories to-day recorded an earthquake which is described as being equal in Intensity to the Japanese earthquake of September, 1923. The Riverview authorities estimate the scene of the shock as nearly 7000 miles distant, possibly along the Pacific coast of America. At the Sydney Observatory It is thought that the disturbance occurred over 11,000 miles from Sydney, probably near the Azores or Cape Verde. It Is regarded as being possibly a purely submarine disturbance, but If near habitations It would Involve a heavy loss of life.
No foreign cablegrams have so far been received on the subject.
The seismograph record began at 7.30 a.m. to-day and indicated a severe disturbance. A second wave began between 8 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. At Sydney Observatory the disturbance moved the Instrument through the limit of its range. The tremors were more severe than those recorded on Saturday and they continued until 11 a.m.
