BACKBLOCK SETTLERS.
LACK OF PROPER ACCESS. CARRY PRODUCE ON BACKS. A striking example of the difficulties faced by backblock settlers not more than 30 miles from Hamilton was given in a letter from the manager of the Taupiri Dairy Company received by the Waikato County Council to-day. The letter pointed out that several suppliers at the top end of Lake Waikare, Ohinewai, had not been able to deliver their cream to the company on account of the rough weather on -the lake. Their only outlet at present was by means of a small boat to the Ohinewai Waiterimu road. The company had been informed by the concerned that for the last month they had been compelled to carry on their backs the whole of their provisions, etc., over the hill which extended for several miles. They could not even use a sledge, as several small culverts wanted putting in. According to tlie settlers, if some culverts were put in they would be prepared to assist the council with labour in making the road useable. The engineer (Mr A. A. Woodward'’ pointed out that there was m legalised road on which culverts could be put. Nothing could he done at present, hut •access was provided for in future works. It was decided to reply on these lines.
