CANADA AND N.Z.
AN AGREEMENT URGED. OPINIONS OF VISITORS. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. The Hon. H. H. Smith, a member of the Victorian Legislative Council, arrived by the Niagara yesterday after an 18 months’ tour of Europe, America and Africa studying marketing conditions. "Undoubted benefits have reaulted from the treaty signed between Australia and Canada,” he said, "and there is no reason why New Zealand should not enjoy them, too. I saw the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr R. B. Bennett, and the Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr 11. 11. Stevens, while I was in Canada and I know that they are both anxious to do business with New Zealand. Canada is perfectly willing to effect an agreement will New Zealand. There are three months in the year when butter production is practically nil in Canada aa 1 the Canadian Government fully recognises .that the people must have cheap butter during that period. Both New Zealand and Australia can fulfil her needs with mutual satisfaction.” Mr J J. A. Howie, who returned by the Niagara from a trip to Europe via Canada, said. "All the Canadians I met were keen to retain New Zealand trade and with it New Zealand butter, and it seems a great pity that something cannot be done to meet this feeling. If a representative of the New Zealand Government would take the matter up again I am sure something satisfactory could be arranged." Mr V. Riddiford, of Lower Hutt, who returned from a visit to Honolulu, said the leading hotels there supplied New Zealand butter on the tables in preference to the local product. New Zealand butter was selling at 55 cents a lb., as against 33 cents for local butter, yet the superior quality of the New Zealand product gave it a limited market.
