FARMERS’ UNION.

MORRINSVILLE BRANCH. There was a good attendance at a meeting of the Morrinsville branch of the Farmers’ Union. The president, Mr A. Topham, presided. The Massey Agricultural College forw’arded particulars of scholarships and conditions. A candidate must be 16 years old and have had one year’s experience of practical farming, and the fee was £l6. Mr Cargill pointed out that It was a difficult matter to deal with. No doubt the Civil Service was overdone and might be adjusted to save costs. Local Rates. Mr Philpott referred to the question of the payment of local rates. He considered the present system favoured the rich man at the expense of the poor man. The man who could pay promptly got 5 per cent, discount anil Ute man who could not pay was penalised 10 per cent. Mr Brown agreed that it was a matter that should be looked into and suggested that Hie chairman and the riding member be asked to attend the | next meeting and thoroughly explain the position. It was resolved to invite the High hnnl teachers Io attend Mr Smallfield's lecture and to admit High School scholars free.
