TRANSPORT PROBLEMS.
ROAD AND RAILWAY. CO-ORDINATION OF SERVICES. (By Telegraph—Special to Times.) 1 WELLINGTON, Thursday, “A Held that presents great scope for national economy is transport," said the Minister of Finance in the House 10-night. “The economic position of the country is now such, however, that the Dominion can no longer afford the economic waste involved !,y the Jack of co-ordination between rail and road transport, and it is essential that action should he taken without further delay to cope with Ihe problem. “Steps have already been I alien lo place the railways under the control of a non-political Hoard with a view lo reducing Iho burden on taxation as much as possible. The essence of the problem is to determine the proper economic spheres of the railways and motor transport respectively, and lo provide adequate machinery for rcgululing tho Iraflle accordingly. “The principal effect of proposed legislation will be the elimination of unnecessary and wasteful competition between motor transport and ihe railways. Tite benefits will be a decrease In railway losses, improved conditions within Ihe motor transport industry, and some relief to county rates consequent upon (lie rfßluclion of traffic to a minimum consistent with the requirements of each area.”
