NGARUAWAHIA BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Ngaruawahia Borough. Council the Mayor (Mr R. Eyre) presided. Also present were Crs. ,T. Prendergast, C. McCowan, F. I. Bidding, K. M. Wright, H. D. Sampson, W. Payne, and the town clerk (Mr 11. D. Fraser). Sitting as the Unemployment Committee, the Rev. Moore and Mr P. J. Burke also took part. It was resolved that In the event of a revised scheme coming into operation again, certain persons be asked to wait on tiie committee to give further particulars in regard to their respective positions. The new councillor, Mr If. M. Wright, was welcomed to his seat in the Council by the Mayor. Borough Estimates. The financial estimates for 1931-32 as drawn up by the Finance Committee were considered. The borough valuation had been reduced by £SOOO. Owing to a debt incurred through a motor accident, there was a debit to begin the year. The expenditure could not bo reduced to correspond and an increase in rates was necessary. The iotal estimated expenditure was £0912, or £230 less Ilian la'st year. An increase of ijd in rates would fail to balance the estimates by £'l2B. It was anticipated that the present overdraft of £7OO would be reduced to £3OO at the end of the year. It had been resolved to reduce the grant to the Plunket Society to £25. —The estimates were passed. Genoral Business. Cr. McCowan, in liis report on street lighting, recommended Ihe cutting out of six lights by altering the position of others. —The report, was adopted. The Streets Committee was authorised to act in obtaining a supply of sand. j The Auckland Automobile Association wrote requesting that flic camp-, ing ground be furnished with sanitary and cooking arrangements.—No action was taken. . The Waikato Hospital Board for-, warded its estimates for the year and j notified that, the borough's subsidy j would 1)0 £ll7 17s Od. I Mr Douglas was appointed hall inspector with power to proceed against! offenders against the by-law prohibit-! ing smoking in the Town Hall. The Council passed a vole of thanks i lo Messrs Ishcrwood and It el la in for the piece of experimental hitumenised road laid down in the borough. The matter of installing doors in Ihe vestibule of Hie Town Hall was left in the hands of the Halt Committee to gel the work done if the quote submitted was suitable.
