RADIO NOTES.

.. .. (By “Rheostat.") It is necessary to follow one very simple rule in order to obtain the best quality of reproduction from your radio. Always tune to the middle of the range on the dial or dials within which the station is received., Do not use the station selector dial? or dial to control the volume of sound. The volume oontrol is for that purpose. Many modern receivers also have local distance 'switches for controlling programmes from powerful nearby stations. In receiving a distant station, heard only at one or two divisions on the dial, the eelector must be very carefully adjusted in order to set it at the middle of the band. Turn the selector dial slowly, with the.volume reduced, and leave it in the position in which the volume is greatest, nr in which the reception sounds best. Remember to turn the dial very slowly so that accurate adjustment may be made.

Many advertisements and strong claims have appeared about the desirability of adding a “tone control" to a radio set. There are certain advantages to be gained on some types of sets. If your radio set falls to amplify the low tones 'such as the drum and bass viol, no tone control can make It do so. On the other hand, if you tlnd that the set sounds too shrill, so that the high notes are too loud in proportion, a tone control will enable you to get a better balance. You will find that many of the best radio receiving sets are not equipped with this device. Such sets and the loud speakers designed to operate with them are properly made so that all of the low, medium and high tones are reproduced uniformly. Where the better grade of set Is equipped with this device you will probably find that this is done more for advertising purposes than for real utility. On a less expensive make, the tone control is. apt to prove of more value. The addition of a tone control is occasionally an improvement to the set.
