IN NEW SOUTH WALES. HUGE COST OF DOLE. Unempolyment registrations in New j South Wales last month reached the record total of 115,000. It is estimated that the dole cost the State . more than £300,000 for the same , period. In March there were 110,000 unem- ! ployed, and the cost of the dole was £270,000. | It was stated at the New South ) Wales Department of Labour, how- , ever, that there has been no increase in food relief during the past few weeks, and that the tide had turned in regard to unemployment. More men seemed to be getting casual work, j and there had been an improvement on the coalfields. £3,500,000 a Year. •For the ten months ended April 30, ' the expenditure on the dole was ; £1,3-13,129, but the present rate of expenditure is well over £3,500,000 a year. In February last year the registrations of those out of work numbered only -10,000, compared with 100,000 in February this year. Last September the total was 75,n00, but it had risen to 90,000 before the last Government went out of office.
