WORK AND PAY OF THE NURSES

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Kindly allow me to express my appreciation of tho nursing staff of the Waikato Hospital. I was a patient in No. 5 ward, and I cannot express in words the kindness ani attention I received from the time of being admitted until discharged. I have seen these nurses classed as ministering angels, and by watching them at work I can Indeed second it. From before daylight they are not walking, but half running, getting along with their work; not a minute to spare, and seeming to be doing half a dozen things at the one time. Then wo hear of a cut In the nurses’ wages, which I know is most disheartening. On hearing of the salaries these girls received for their last pay my heart wenl out in deep sympathy for them. We hear so many threats of men shirking. What would be the results if the nurses came out on strike? No, they are too brave to leave their patients, yet they arc disheartened by being given paltry shillings per week —only a wage a child would receive for minding babies. Why arc not girls encouraged lo take up the nursing; they cannot ho done without. Let some of !he Cabinet Mlnisteis’ daughters come and do what, these dear girls are doing and I hey would soon have their salaries doubled. Hoping a more aide pen Ilian mine will take the matter up.—-I am, pie., MOST GRATEFUL. Ilamilion, June 4, 1931-
