LOSS TO SPORT.

MR W. R. EYRE LEAVING. ... CRICKETER AND SWIMMER. ■GOING TO PALMERSTON NORTH. The sporting fraternity of Hamiltou is to lose one of its keenest enthusiasts, in the person of Mr W. R. Eyre, the \vell-known cricketer, swimmer and athlete, who will leave at the end of the month to take up residence In Palmerston North, where he will carry on the printing business established by his father, the late Mr R. 11. Eyre. It is just over three years since Mr Eyre came to Hamilton from Palmerston North to take over the duties of physical director of the Hamilton Y.M.C.A. Prior to coming here he had a distinguished record as an athlete, and was a member -of the Leaders’ Corps in Palmerston North. Under his direction the local Y.M.C.A.. has progressed considerably, and the gymnastic and social activities have been a marked success. Soon after his arrival here Air Eyre took over the sole charge of the Y.M.C.A. In sporting circle Mr Eyre has made a name for himself. As a cricketer he topped batting and bowling averages in the local competitions last year, when he played for the Hamilton Club, and was also a member of the Hawke Cup team which defeated Manawatu. He played Association football for the Y.M.C.A. Club, and represented Waikato as goalkeeper in this game. Swimming was another of his interests. Hundreds of swimmers passed through his hands as the'chief instructor and secretary for the South Auckland district of the Royal LifeSaving Society. He was also coach to the Y.M.C.A. Club. In Palmerston North, before he came to Hamilton, Mr Eyre represented Manawatu in Rugby, cricket and swimming for several -seasons, anR ■had many notable performances to his credit. As a Rugby representative for four seasons he participated in a number of big fixtures. Apart from sport, Air 'Eyre has done ■much useful social work during his sojourn in Hamilton, lie was an honorary child welfare officer, and a member of numerous public bodies. His departure will be regretted by a large circle of friends. In the gymnasium and on the sports ground he enjoyed great popularity, and he will be greatly missed. Mr Eyre’s successor as physical director at the Y.M.C.A. has not yet been appointed.
