FIND OF MOA REMAINS,
EIGHT COMPLETE SKELETONS'. birds trapped in a cave, gome months ago a oave was discovered by Mr 0. S war brick on l»is property at Otoko, near Gisborne, in which the skeletons of twelve moas were found. More recently Mr Swarbrlck discovered another cave in Ihe same locality, in which wore found the remains of eight moas in a good slate of preservation. Five of the skeletons have been assembled by Mr \V. A. UolYe, with heads and nocks complete, and four ■of them arc four feet high. Another, which stands 8 feel, high, lias been kept ky Mr Swarbriek. it is supposed that these birds were sheltering in the cave when an earthquake' took placo, dislodging some immense boulders, which blocked the entrance, thus trapping them. It was dilllcult to get into the cave, as- the hole was just large enough to allow a man to pass through. The skeletons were covered to a depth of two feet with volcano ash and pumice, which acted as a preservative.
