CHURCHING THE MAYOR

COUNCIL AT CATHEDRAL. APPEAL FOR LEADERSHIP. The Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, and members of the Hamilton Borough Council were present at the service held in St. Peter’s Cathedral yesterday morning. There was a very large congregation. The service was conducted by Dean G. R. Barnett, assisted by the Rev. C. Melville Newton. Special lessons ware read and the prayers had reference to the Mayor and council. In his sermon, Dean Barnett took his' text from Joshua 15, 14v. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord," and spoke on the problems of leadership in relation to religion. There was need, he said, for a definite statement as to what was believed and why it was believed.* One of the reasons for the present state of chaos in the world was the lack of deep conviction concerning the great problems people were called upon to face. The people 'of '"Hamilton looked to the Mayor and council to give them strong, wise leadership. It was not the council’s duty to find out what the people wanted, but to know what the).'' themselves believed to be right for every man and woman in the town, and to do those works which would we for the benefit of the whole of the people and for the town. Call for Courage. The Dean urged the council to face its problems with courage and optimism. They would be doing God’s work. Those who were helped must play the game and give a fair return for what was done for them. Concluding, the Dean exhorted his hearers to observe God’s commands, first to love and serve Him, and secondly to love our neighbours as ourselves. He trusted that the council would do its duty courageously, knowing that they had God’s help and the prayers and sympathy of their fellow citizens. When the end of their term came may it be said of them “ Well done thou good and faithful servants." Those present included the Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold and Crs. W. Bourne, A. J. Denz, H. D. Caro, H. M. Hammond, F.'H. Clapham, W. A. Curteis, W. W. Dillicar, S. V. Tyler and the town clerk, Mr W. L. Waddel. Girl Guides of St. Peter’s and First Claudelands Companies, and the Scouts of St. Peter’s Troop were also present. SERVICE AT CAMBRIDGE, j -r/ __________ As Is customary following the election of the Mayor and council, a special civic service was held in St. Andrew’s Church of England, Cambridge, on Sunday morning. The vicar, Venerable Archdeacon Gordon Bell, conducted the service, and at his invitation, in addition to the Mayor and councillors, representatives . of every local body, society, and institution were present. ■‘A procession about 200 strong, led by the Municipal Band, formed at the Town Hall and marched to the church, where special seats were reserved. The •vicar delivered an impressive sermon, taking for his text, the sixth chapter of Isaiah and the first verse WBUitearrit i

“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up." The scripture lessons were read by the Mayor (Mr C. H. Priestly) and Mr Mervyn Wells (Deputy Mayor).
